I would believe yes, since without a valid permit how can you work?
The sitution is not the same. I am not doing placement for a agency.. Doing virtually means i am practising what i study in one of my friend and doing assignments along with it. Do we need a permit for that?

I am not working for a agency. I am practising my skills on my friends . Does that need a permit?
As an international student, can I take part in co-op and internship programs?
If you are in an academic, professional or vocational training program at a designated learning institution that requires work experience, such as a co-op or internship placement, you will need a work permit as well as a study permit.
To get a work permit, you must prove that the work experience is essential to completing your program. Acceptable proof could include a letter from the school you are attending or a copy of the school curriculum.
The work experience cannot be more than 50% of your total program of study.

So are you getting a co-op credit for this? If not it is no a co-op placement. If yes, you need a co op permit. Are you being paid by a Canadian employer who is your friend.

I am not getting paid. But my college is telling that its ok to do placements without the permit.

do we need a co op permit if we are doing our placements virtually??
Hello,

You need a co-op permit if it is a requirement to complete your program and if you'll be getting paid or not. Only on the exception if your school specifically rejigged their curriculum to exempt the co-op program or got it replaced by other academic work—maybe due to the challenging effect of the mutated COVID-19 virus.

Speak with your course advisor and the international admissions office for further guide.
