Conjugal partner of Post graduate work permit students

Hi All,

I'm here on my PGWP, can I apply for a work permit for my "CONJUGAL" partner for the duration of my PGWP?

No - open work permits aren't granted for conjugal partners. You either need to be married or common law. Common law means you have lived together continuously for at least one full year and can prove it.

Aaaww! that's a sad news. Thanks for your response. How about a visiting visa (TRV)?

A conjugal partner does not qualify for a dependent visa of any kind. Having said that, you conjugal partner can certainly try applying for a TRV on his / her own. If approved, the TRV will allow him / her to visit here temporarily - a TRV does not allow a person to live, work or attend school in Canada.

Thanks again. So if he should apply for a TRV on his own, will he need a letter of invitation from someone in Canada (if yes, can I write for him just as a frind - no strings attached). If he doesn't need a letter of invitation, what can he say is the reason for his visit?

It's your choice if you include a letter of invitation or not. You can - but it's not mandatory.

The reason for the visit would either be tourism or to visit a friend.

Ok, thanks and sorry for all these questions. So if he decides to use "to visit a friend" he does not need an invitation letter. I'm guessing he would need to put the address and details of the friend he is visiting. Am I right so far?
My next concern is, if he says he is visiting a friend that is a female, will it raise an eyebrow or affect the decision in anyway?

Yes - it will most likely increase CIC's concerns he has plans on remaining in Canada long term and this person is a female.

Thanks for your responses. Actually we are getting married by early next year, then we hope he can apply for an open work permit based on the validity of mine (which should still be over 1 year). But we are thinking of how he can get a valid visa to come to Canada while processing the permit. Any suggestions on how to handle this?

The only option is the visitor visa - but again, it doesn't allow him to move here or live here. He can only visit temporarily.

Yes I know the TRV won't let him move or live here. He'll apply for a more permanent visa. It's just a visa that will at least let him come and visit while processing the permanent one. Thank you so much for your time and responses.
