Confused - Information Overload (regarding US citizen )

I have been reading the canadian immigration sites and the US sites - I really am confused.

First Question: This will be my first trip to Canada with my minor child to visit some family property; What do I need as far as documentation for the Canadian border?

Second Question: If I decide that I will be moving to Canada in the future to this property will I need to obtain all the documentation i.e, Work permit - Temporary Residence Visa - or do I need to do this when I actually decide to pack up and move.

I am really confused ? - help

1. To visit you require proof of you and your child's citizenship and proof of funds to maintain yourself. You will either have to proof of sole custody of the child or a notarized letter from the other parent allowing you to take the child to Canada. You cannot have a criminal record.
2. You can't pack up and move. You would require permanent resident status to remain in Canada permanently see: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/index.asp take the assessment there to see if you qualfiy. You realize it is at least a 2 year process if you qualfiy?
3. As a visitor you cannot work nor can your child attend school. To obtain a work permit you will have to find an employer who is will to apply to Service Canada for a Labour Market Opinion that there are no Canadians or PRs available for the job, and that they have advertised extensively. Then if it is approved and you have the background/skills for the position you may apply for a work permit. You maybe eligible for a work permit under NAFTA or GATS which do not require an LMO but they are very specific.
