Hey all. I'm sure this is a fairly common question, and I'm fairly certain I know the answer, but I just wanted to see if anybody can tell me with a good degree of certainty whether or not I'm already a Canadian citizen by birth.
My mother was born in CT, USA in 1960. Her parents moved her to Nova Scotia when she was about 14 (1974) and had her naturalized then. She's unsure of the exact timing of their departure from NS, but they left before she turned 17, then she met my father in York, ME and had me in 1981. She visited Montreal in 1990 for a Who concert, and the officers at the border asked her if she knew that she was a Canadian citizen. She never filed to retain her citizenship, and my guess is that she probably lost it when she turned 28.
Am I a Canadian citizen because she was still a Canadian citizen when I was born, or did I have to apply for citizenship by the time I turned 28? I was born in June, so, I believe the 2009 Act (which took effect in April, as far as I'm aware) saved me from having to file to retain my citizenship that year. 2009 was the year I turned 28, obviously.
Also, she has since lost her records, so I have no way to prove that she was ever naturalized. I'm hoping that NS still has a record of her naturalization. Is this a serious roadblock? Do I need to figure out a way to find her naturalization papers?
Thanks for any help, and I hope that any answers to my situation can help others somehow.
[EDIT]: I forgot to mention that I was actually born in New Mexico, USA.
