Okay so here goes...
We move from Ontario to BC a year ago. I am a Canadian citizen by birth, my partner is a permanent resident to Canada, with Polish citizenship and a travellers VISA to the US, I believe valid for a few years still.
He works literally a stone throw from the border, in South Surrey. The housing crisis here is brutal! We are spending 2,600 a month all in for rent and utilities housing costs on a 2 bedroom rancher home. We want to downsize, this is nuts! We could easily save $1,300 a month by renting a place near Bellingham.

Is it possible to live in the US (rent not own) and drive back home into Canada for work on a daily basis?

No - not possible. If you try, expect to run into big issues with US immigration.

You don't have authorization to live in the US. To do this, you would need US citizenship or a US green card or some sort of US work permit (not visitor) that allows you to actually live in the US.
