Hello all,
I am currently in the process of sponsoring my girlfriend as common-law partner. (Application submitted, 61% completed by CIC/IRCC, just waiting on that darn CSQ from Quebec.)
She received her work permit and her SIN in Februrary 2020.
I am trying to figure out how we'll go about filing her 2019 taxes, as she now "exists" in the eyes of the CRA, and she has been living in Canada/Quebec with me since July 2018.
We are technically common-law partners since July 2019.
She does not work and has never worked since she is in Canada, so no income.
I have updated my martial status in the CRA website to common-law, so that's done.
Here are my questions:
- When she will produce her income taxes for 2019, as what type of resident will it have to be? Deemed resident, immigrant?
- As for my own tax filing, can I declare her as my "dependant" since I provide for her? what kind of credit can I get back?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
