Just about to mail in our application!

My common law partner plans on visiting me here in Canada in January while our PR app is in process. Should he have a copy of the receipt of payment for our PR application
Upon entering Canada Will he be held against entrance at the border because he could intentionally have intent in staying in Canada? We're not too sure
If he will actually be in Canada till the entire process in complete as he has a job in Italy. He'll probably get his ticket for a 3 month period and if an extension is needed we will apply. He is an Italian citizen and I'm a Canadian born citizen.

Do you have any experience with this?

Thanks for the help!

Yes, he should carry proof of the PR app and just say that he is visiting his partner while the app processes. He should have no issues, especially with a return ticket 3 months from entry.

i was at the border with the same situation just yesterday. they let me in, but before that 3 officers asked me all possible questions, few times :) so, how long i am planning to stay - i said as long as they let me and that i know i can visit up to six months. no return ticket, cuz i don't know how long they will let me stay :) also they looked at my contract with the company in my country - glad i had it in carry on with me. also checked payment for sponsorship application, medicals proof - they basically checked everything people here told me they can check. my partner was with me, and they checked also his passport, they were looking for information about our application, but it is not in the system yet (applied in late October).
anyway: yep, they asked all questions, checked my documents, and then with nice voice told me i've got 6 months and i can extend of course if i want to :)

Did you tell the officer right away that you were here visiting your spouse while you wait for your PR approval? We don't have anything to hide, but some say don't say anything until you are asked and some say tell right away when the officer asks for the purpose of your travel. He's only coming to visit while we wait.

Thanks for your help!

I have been living in Canada as a "visitor" since early 2012. I have been back and forth to the USA several times since and have had no issues at the border so far. My application is outland and we are expecting processing to complete soon ( after some frustrating administrative delays). If you want to stay in Canada during the processing times, simply apply for an extension online and most likely you will be granted a 12 month visa.

Hey Chala!

I applied for PR in September, inland. My study permit ends August, 2015. If I don't continue with my education, can I apply for some kind of "visitor's visa"?

My husband came back to Canada in August after our sponsorship was approved.I was waiting outside with all the documents just in case. They asked his reason for coming and who he was visiting , how long for etc. He just told them what they asked for an nothing else.He was fine well they did lose his luggage . He had a return ticket .He is also coming back in a few weeks .I will be outside once again with the fee receipt ,our marriage certificate and this time our sponsorship approval.

If I understand it correctly, Inland applicants have implied status while their application is in process and must not leave Canada during that time, so therefore applying for a visitor extension isn't necessary. Maybe others on here can confirm if this is still the case. I am an Outland applicant so I did need the extension to maintain legal status beyond the normal 6 months.

Inland applicants only have Implied Status if they submit an OWP app (or for current international students, a study permit extension app) along with the inland PR app.

Those who do not submit the OWP/study permit app must apply to extend their status just like everyone else.

If you didn't submit an OWP or study permit app with your inland PR app, then you will need to apply to change the conditions and extend your stay as a visitor prior to your study permit expiring. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/visitor.asp
