I just found out that my application for a work permit as a common-law partner was refused because I was not able to prove that our relationship as common-law partners is genuine. The problem is that we don't have any lease because we have lived at my parents house, we also don't have a joint bank account because this service is not provided in my country. Is there any way in which I could prove that our relationship is genuine? Please share your experiences, I hope there is still hope to be approved...

Hi Aprillee,

I am sorry that your partner couldn't get through this time.

You may prove the relationship by providing few or all of these proofs to satisfy the VO.

1) You can get a letter from yours and your common law's parents signed before a notary with their photographs.

The letter should state that you are in common law partnership with their consent and they know both of you living together.

2) Attach yours and your common law's birth certificate to prove the people gave letters are really your parents.

3) Make your facebook profile public with photos together and relationship status state that you are in relationship with each other etc. Mention the links to your profile in your cover letter or anywhere you can.

4) Any past train tickets, flight tickets confirming that you both travelled together along with photos during the trip.

5) Any bank transaction between each other. Transaction receipt from bank or Money transfer services.

6) Try to get letters from your neighbours stating that they know you guys were their neighbours for these many years and living together.

7) If joint account is not available. There must be something called 'Nomination Facility' ( This is usually a form you have to fill out to delcare who will get your money after your lifetime). Nominate your common law and get a letter from your bank confirming your nominee is your common law. Your common law can also get such thing done with his Canadian bank account as well.

And yes, usually applicants use Skype Call history, Phone bills and envelopes of postal mails sent when your spouse is in Canada.

In short, try to provide all the traces of your relationship which you think it can satisfy a person who have no idea about who you are and what you have been doing.

Good Luck.

thank you for your response! I provided a letter of my mother stating that we both have lived at her apartment, I also attached some proof of posts on facebook with our pictures that were posted publicly, I provided a copy of plane tickets when we travelled together, I also included bank transactions between us... Seems like I provided everything and it's still not enough for them and now I feel devastated...
