Good evening all.

Today I received my POE letter which was great. However it is a little early for me to leave my home country just yet.
The letter states that I can enter Canada from May this year until 8th of May 2018

My question is, is my work permit valid until 8th of May, 2018 or does my work permit start when I arrive in Canada?

Also if 8th of May, 2018 is the end of my work permit then I don't know why I only received a one year permit as I am from a country that can be granted a permit for up to 2 years.

I would like to go to Canada in September but if I can only work until the following May it is not much use to me as someone continuing to build my career. I have previously been to Australia on a working holiday and found 6 months permission to work there a major deterrent to getting the better jobs.

Any help is of great assistance. I am basically wondering if my POE letter is also an expression of the length of my work permit.

Assuming you are on an IEC program then you have answered your own question with the POE stating 'enter Canada from May this year through 8th May 2018' so you have until the expiry date of the POE letter to land in Canada. Your permit actually gets issued at the border by CBSA assuming you have 2 years travel insurance, proof of 2500 CDN at the time and passport validity beyond the planned permit validity. Be aware that if you do not meet the landing requirements the permit could be issued for a shorter time than expected.

One question though given a POE is usually valid only for 12 months and today is only May 5th are you sure the POE says May 8th given unusual to be post dated. ? What is the actual POE issue date showing ?

Thank you for your reply. So the expiry date on the POE is not also the expiry date on the work permit?
It is therefore correct to assume that if I land in Canada in September 2017 my work permit will be valid until September 2019?

(In relation to the dates on the POE the validity is actually 03/05/18 and enter Canada by 03/05/18)
