Hello~

Question: how long does it take to get co-op work permit?

I applied co op work permit through on-line 9th,Jan,2016. According to CIC web, it takes usually one month to process;however, the process is still ongoing.

I'm in bit of hurry, cuz i got co-op job offer commencing 3rd/May/2016, and I need to provide them my SIN#. Without the work permit, i can't get SIN#. At the same time, i also sent my student visa for amendment, and I'm not even able to know how this is going.

To get SIN# either of two need to be finalized and be on my hand. Because of SIN# I could lose the job offer.

Could you guys help me to handle this predicament?

According to CIC website, co-op work permit processing time is 144 days (it is under the category of work permit extension - new employers)...
I am in the same boat. I applied for co-op work permit online on december 17th, but my work starts in May. With such a delay in processing I won't be able to get it in time. But I have my SIN number (you can get SIN number as long as you have a study permit) so I can start first...
But yeah look into getting your SIN number with your status as a student for now. I think if you are working may-august, you can start your job as off-campus worker for the first month. It depends on your own situation so don't quote me on this.

sin number given with a study permit only allows students to work part time <20 hours / week. in which case is not applicable to use in substitute of coop work permit even in a short period of time because coop is considered full time. essentially you can i guess "start" working coop but only until 20hours in the first week :S

im also waiting for my coop permit and i start in may and i have a job secured....
i applied just few days ago. ill have to swing my the border worst case scenario....

anyone know if applying for coop under study permit extension is faster? (with one application)
i can apply for extensioni of studypermit along with coop (if thats faster) but my study permit only expires in august, they refuse the process when the applications are submitted too early in advance :(

You can work full time during scheduled break of your school so SIN number can allow you to work in first month. since you need 12 weeks of coop each term so you have to get the work permit before june. I confirmed that for myself but i dont know your situation though.
I'll try flagpoling sometime during april for the last resort as well. Do you mind if I ask you which border you are planning to go to?

Google "work permit flagpoling", apparently a lot of ppl do it...
Especially read a lot about ppl going for the rainbow bridge border at Niagara falls for this.

I heard mixed responses but the majority was successful. The take home point I learnt from other ppl's experiences is that as long as you have all the documents and can prove that you need the permit urgently, they will give you approval. There's one person on this forum did it 3 month before his work starts, and he was told to apply through CIC first and that he could go back to them if the CIC application doesn't come out in time.
