Hi group members,

I am a Canadian permanent resident residing in Toronto. My dad recently passed away and I am trying to bring my mom to Canada to be with me. Since PR is not an easy route, I am considering applying for a Super Visa for her. I have spoken to a couple of consultants in India but I am still trying to answer a few questions that I am hoping the good folks here could help me with.

My mom will most likely come in June/July, 2022. However, I intend to start the process right now so she can have her passport stamped with the Super Visa. Here are my doubts:
  • Do I need to buy a flight ticket in advance? Her travel date will be sometime in future as I need to make sure I move in to a rental property that's more accommodating to her.
  • Do I need to buy insurance in advance? I read that she needs to get an insurance cover of atleast $100,000. Do I need to get this insurance even before the super visa application or after she gets her passport stamped but before her arrival into Canada? Considering the cost is expensive, I'd prefer only applying for insurance when she actually arrives.
  • Do I need to show IT returns for my mom? She hasn't paid taxes in India since '16 (she's a housewife)
  • Do I need to have a lease in my name? I currently stay in a condo that's shared with 2 other folks. The lease is in the name of my roommate. If this is absolutely necessary then I can request my landlord to add me to the lease or have my roommate draw a sublease contract with me.
  • Do I need to be in Canada at the time of application? I am currently spending time in India to support my mother after my dad passed away. I will most likely be back in Toronto in March. Can I still apply from India though?
  • My current work is not permanent but contract based that expires in March, 2022. Is this going to be a problem in my application?
Apologies for too many questions, would rather prefer putting it out there in one post :)

Thanks to everyone in advance who took the time to read this and answer with their valuable advise.

  • Do I need to buy a flight ticket in advance? Her travel date will be sometime in future as I need to make sure I move in to a rental property that's more accommodating to her. Not required. Visa can be applied without an advance flight ticket.
Yes, it is a mandatory requirement by CIC. You will need that to apply with the visa application. Good news, some companies allow monthly payment options instead of full payment. Try it out
  • Do I need to show IT returns for my mom? She hasn't paid taxes in India since '16 (she's a housewife) Not required. But I would highly recommend that you attach your last year's NOA and if possible, recent pay stubs.
  • Do I need to have a lease in my name? I currently stay in a condo that's shared with 2 other folks. The lease is in the name of my roommate. If this is absolutely necessary then I can request my landlord to add me to the lease or have my roommate draw a sublease contract with me. Not sure about this. But if I would be in your shoes, I would apply with a lease under my name
  • Do I need to be in Canada at the time of application? I am currently spending time in India to support my mother after my dad passed away. I will most likely be back in Toronto in March. Can I still apply from India though? You don't have to be. The only requirement is the applicant (parent) should be outside of Canada during the application
  • My current work is not permanent but contract based that expires in March, 2022. Is this going to be a problem in my application? As long as you fulfill the income requirement, I think you will be fine. Try to add any asset you may have, to make it a stronger case to the visa officer.

Hey Harsh, Sorry for your loss. I've answered a few questions for you.

Also, don't forget to add the proof of vaccination if your mom is fully vaccinated. Good luck!!

Don’t purchase any tickets until you have a visa approved. Proof of an itinerary is fine. No need to have a lease in your name but depending on your savings, etc. there could be concerns about supporting another person and paying for are two on your own. How long have you been in Canada? How long will you be out of Canada during this trip. Applying for a supervisa while abroad supporting your mother could raise concerns that your mother will be moving with you to Canada. She will need to provide proof that she only visiting you in Canada and has strong enough ties that show that she will return home once her supervisa expires.

Hi @mpreetsingh thank you for taking the time to respond to my questions and your condolences. Yes, she is fully vaccinated and can attach this proof.

One question, can I apply for the insurance for the sake of getting the supervisa approved and then deactivate it? I am planning to apply it next week and assuming I have her passport stamped by Feb, can I deactivate the insurance after that?

I can then reactivate it in July before she flies. Just curious as it won't make sense to pay the monthly premium even though she is not in Canada.

Hi @canuck78, thanks for taking the time to respond. I will be here in India untill March 1st week. She will probably come in June or July. I can probably show that we own a house here in India to show that she will be returning back here after the super visa ends. What do you think?

I won't use the word "deactivate" here. It will have a different meaning.

Yes, supervise insurance date can be pushed or adjusted to the date of arrival in Canada. With monthly payment, you will pay for two months in advance only. The rest will start from the date when she lands in Canada. Please do not cancel your insurance after visa issuance. It will jeopardize her visa conditions.

Yes owning a home to return to is one of the ties she can show. She does need somewhere to return to once she can no longer remain in Canada on her supervisa. Given that she is a widow and you have remained in India for a significant time with her it can appear as you have been living with her in India and that she will be trying to move to Canada with you when you return. If she needs to return to India to get her pension that would be another tie. Do you have other siblings? If yes, where do they live? It looks like you may have been outside of Canada for quite some time so you may not have met the RO to qualify for healthcare in your province. Would suggest looking into whether you will need to reapply on your return. Having a valid Health card doesn’t mean you qualify for healthcare and if you haven’t met the RO you can be charged for any healthcare you access after the fact. Reapplying is often not a big deal and many of the wait times are currently waived although the wait times will eventually return..

Would you suggest a good visa consultant/lawyer in GTA to help me with my mom’s super visa process? I want to make sure the consultant is well experienced who can foresee potential problems as @canuck78 mentioned in the posts here.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to. I've applied for my parents myself and it got approved early this month.
