There has been a lot of writing on these issues, so much that I don’t have a clear understanding of the final answer.

To be clear, if my wife (waiting for a residency visa) applies for a TRV to visit Canada with me (a Canadian citizen but living with her in China) …

(1) Is my credit card with a high limit an acceptable proof of sufficient funds? Or does she have to have money in her own bank account and a debit card?

(2) I know that she is supposed to have a letter of invitation from someone living in Canada, but this seems – um – silly since it is I who will cover our costs while we visit family in Canada. Is it prudent to get a letter from my family anyway?

Hmmmm. Tricky eh. :) Attach a notarized undertaking from you.

No need for the letter. Attach a copy of the receipt paid for your sponsorship app and a copy of your status in Canada (Canadian passport), and a letter of dual intent.

By a "letter of dual intent" do you mean a brief explanation that we plan to move to Canada if a Residency visa is granted, but meanwhile we want to visit family while the weather is warm (i.e. summer)?

(Because if we wait for Hell to freeze over, which is when Hong Kong will get around to awarding a visa, it will be too cold.) ;D

ROFL. Yes, (for the dual intent letter).
