Hi guys

Here is my situation:

I am single (so no family or kids) and became permeant resident in August 2017, stayed in Canada for a month then went back home and worked there between September 2017 and July 2019. So for 2 tax years (2017 and 2018) I was outside Canada and didn't file, but filed my taxes for 2019, 2020, and 2021.

In the citizenship application it asks if I filed between 2017 and 2021, and when I said I didn't for 2017 and 2018 it asked another question for these two years: Required to file? I have done some research and found that I could be what is known as Non-Resident of Canada. which might mean that I wasn't required to file.

Can anybody who knows or has been through a similar situation (where they landed but then left the country immediately for more than a year) tell me if I am right? Or give me more details that might be helpful.

Again my best guess is that I didn't have to file since no ties at the time and no Canadian income, but want reassurance.

Looking forward to some insight

Correct. You can say No to "required to file" and No to "Filed" for those 2 years.
