Hi All - I will appreciate if anyone can advise on below situation.
If some one on a PR Status from January 2015 to January 2019 (5 Years) and lived only 2 years, will he be eligible to renewed his PR for next 5 years from January 2019 to January 2023 and again lived for 1 Year till January 2020 on new PR so my question is after spending 1 year on new PR and 2 years on previous PR which will be 3 years, will he be eligible for Citizenship application or he need to spend 3 years on new PR to be eligible for Citizenship.

PR residency obligations is a rolling 5 year. It is not based on validity of PR card. So for any 5 year period after Jan 2015 they need to have 730 days to renew the card and 1095 days for citizenship. So if you are trying to renew PR or apply for citizenship in Jan 2023, then from starting 2018 onwards you should have 730 days for PR card renewal or 1095 days for citizenship application.

Many thanks for your reply so if I live last 2 years in my first five years and only first 1 year after PR renewal will i be eligible for citizenship or do I have to live 3 years on new PR to be eligible for Citizenship?

Applying for citizenship is based on being physically in Canada for 3 years in the 5 years prior to the date the application is submitted. So if you submitted today May 22 2018 then you would need to show that you have physically resided in Canada for 1095 days in period May 22 2013 through May 22 2018.

There is also a rule where time before landing as a PR can be counted at one half day for each full physical presence day in Canada upto a credit of 1 year towards citizenship but this still needs to be in the 5 year window at application time.

As per previous poster this has nothing to do with validity of a PR card or renewal of a card it is all about physical presence in Canada in the 5 years preceeding citizenship application date.

To renew a PR card you need in initial 5 years from landing show 730 days in Canada. After the initial 5 years this becomes a rolling 5 years where you need to show 730 days in the 5 years preceeding the PR card renewal application date. The PR residency obligation applies also if you leave the country and come back where you could be challenged on days in country based on same rules as PR card renewal.

Again,it is not based on dates in the PR card. It is based on the date you became permanent resident of Canada. So the last 2 years from the date you became PR , you can renew PR card. And if you stay in Canada for one more year after that then you can apply for citizenship.
