I read that there are some pre-requisites for someone to get Canadian citizenship like PR, knowledge of the country, proficiency in English or French etc. Question is - if someone's family members (also holding PR status and eligible for Citizenship) have problem in the language proficiency, will the Citizenship be denied to the full family ? For example, I can recollect many families settled in Canada from North India but most of their family members have zero communication skills in English/French. How did they get Citizenship ?

You can apply as an individual regardless of your family.

Once someone is older than 54, they do not have to pass the citizenship exam any more, just a short talk with a citizenship judge so it is possible that they could get citizenship without knowing much English or French.

Leon, thanks for your reply. But does that mean other family members having language issues do not get Citizenship ? How have thousands of people from China managed to get Citizenship with zero knowledge of English/French ? Or even thousands of Punjabi families from North India who cannot speak in English but hold Citizenship ?

I don't know. Are you sure they don't know English/French and are you sure they have citizenship?

It is possible that they know enough English/French to have passed the test or they have failed the test and passed the interview. However, they might have forgotten some of it again if it was a long time ago and they live in communities where they never need it or they simply prefer to speak their native language.

Also, they might not be citizens, they might be PR's. As a PR, you can live in Canada forever as long as you don't commit any crimes serious enough to be kicked out.
