Quick back story:

I am an American and My husband is Canadian by birth since our son was born in the States as I was high risk and had medical insurance, we now want him to get his Canadian Citizenship as we are both intending on living here ( I applied for PR in January). I was confused about the Citizenship process for him.

1. Citizenship application requests two forms of ID : passport ( no problem can get once I have his SSN) and another form of ID with photo. The problem is he's 8 days old so he has no health card with a photo ( ours don't have photos), driver's license or the like. All he'd have would be his US passport, SSN and birth certificate.

2. Would I need a registration for birth abroad for him? It's confusing.

3. Can I ( or his father) even fill out CIT 001 for him? Some of the questions looked weird for an infant. I want to make sure we get this done right as I've already had enough hassle with my own PR application.

4. Do I need to provide our marriage certificate as well ( as his father is Canadian and not me and my son has his name)?

Thanks in advance.

1. One photo ID will do, such as US passport will do, along with SSN and US birth certificate.

2. There is no registration for birth abroad for Canada.

3. You or his father can fill out the application. The answers though must be in your infant's point of view as if he is filling it out himself.

4. No, you do not need to provide marriage certificate. It is the infant US birth certificate that you must provide. It will show the father's name on it. You also must provide copy of husband's birth certificate with application. You can provide marriage certificate but not needed unless check list says you must.

thank you so much for clarifying it. I wasn't sure. It was a little weird filling it out as my son. Thanks again. Now we just need my husband's birth certificate and my son's passport ( I won't forget a copy of page 27 from your previous advice, thanks btw).

Oh right. Forgot about page 27 copy. Got to show that too. Even though it is an empty page.

Don't forget that you can use US passcard as well for photo ID as well. If that is an option.

One other thing, you must show both sides of the birth certificates, both US and husband birth certificate.

You would normally send official birth certificates (issued by the government agency that registers births) for both the husband and the child, not simple photocopies. The certificates are not returned. However, it may be possible to send copies that have been certified. Instructions are here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/CIT0001ETOC.asp#CIT0001E4

I don't know if you mean certified or official, but getting an official copy from Canada can be complicated. In Ontario, for example, you need a guarantor, and you can only have 1 short and 1 long birth certificate in your possession. Either short or long would probably work in your case, though I'd be inclined to choose long (showing husband's parentage) for a citizenship matter.
