Morning All,

When our son was born recently, we notified CIC (ottawa pilot) of the birth and provided the birth certificate. They responded with:

"Thank you for your enquiry.
Please note that if you are a Canadian Citizen, your child would automatically be eligible to apply for a citizenship certificate. Congratulations to the new parents!
Please visit http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/certif.asp for information on how to apply for your child citizenship certificate.
Yours truly,
Immigration Officer (SG)
Case Processing Pilot - Ottawa"

Does anyone have any background on this? What is a citizenship cert? Does it mean we can get our son a Canadian passport right away? I am the Sponsor, my wife the applicant.
How long does it take to obtain this cert? I'm assuming it would entitle my son to health care and all the other bennies correct?

Any background you can provide would be great.

Thank You
-A

1. If the child was born in Canada, Canadian citizen, birth certificate is sufficient.
2. If the child was born outside Canada, and one of the parents was a Canadian citizen (not through descent) then the parent can apply for proof of citizenship: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof.asp
3. Child if born in Canada, eligible for medical coverage from day 1, born outside Canada, is eligible for medical, depending on the province either immediately on entry or after 3 month waiting period.

As a child born to a Canadian parent, your son qualifies for automatic Canadian citizenship. You need to apply for a Certificate of Canadian Citizenship, the link to the forms and guide is the one you were given in the response letter from CIC (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof-how.asp).

Processing times may vary but it's listed at 5 months from the moment you submit your application, according to the CIC website (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof-how.asp). Once you get your child's citizenship certificate you can apply for a Canadian passport.

hope this helps.

Hi, I am American my husband Canadian, our children were born in the US. Soon as I got their birth certificates my husband filled out the application (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/citizen/CIT0001E.pdf ) sent it with 2 photos of the baby and copies of both their birth certificates and paid a 75 dollar fee and we had their citizenship cards with-in a month. Once you obtain the citizenship card you can apply for passport. but if your coming into Canada you won't need a passport right away. In Ontario the baby is covered right away as long as the child is under I believe it was 6 months after that a 3 month wait but all other benefits yes....

The only docs for the baby would be the birth certificate?
And ofcourse the photographs.

Isn't the baby eligible for the (temporary/limited validity) Cdn passport right away?

Or still have to wait for citizenship certificate(proof) before the passport?

You are right, the child if eligible for a Canadian Citizenship Certificate, can also apply for a limited validity passport if you do not want to wait for the citizenship certificate. I have confirmation of this by a Canadian Embassy in the country where my wife leaves in Europe. But you have to bring both the application for a Canadian Citizenship Certificate and Limited Validity Passport at the same time to the embassy. Usually you get the Limited Validity passport within three weeks. So there is no need to wait for the 5 months (minimum) for the certificate to travel into Canada with the baby.

A few months back, we applied for a citizenship cert for our 2yo daughter. All they required at the embassy was her birth certificate, and pictures. From us, of course all papers about marriage, Ids, etc.. (outlined in the relavant pdf). Process is painless, but will take between 6 to 8 months, and no more than 12 according to the embassy staff.

Once you get this, you can get a Canadian passport for your Son. Having Canadian citizenship does not affect the status of your child's other country, which in my case is Thailand. She has a Thai passport for here too, so we will be able to travel back and forth without need of a visa for her.
