Citizenship by descent?

Sorry if the answer to this is obvious, but I am tying myself up in knots reading about it!

My Grandad was born in Canada (Ontario), in 1929. He emigrated to Scotland when he was 2 years old.

My Mum was born in Scotland in 1962. She has never made any attempt to apply for Canadian citizenship, and my Grandad didn't notify the Canadian government of her birth or anything.

If my Grandad hadn't renounced his citizenship or had it revoked before my Mum was born, does that mean she is a Canadian citizen by descent? Even though she has never tried to apply for citizenship and has never had any kind of certificate?

If I was born in 1986, and my Mum was a Canadian citizen by descent, does this mean I am also a Canadian citizen by descent?

Thanks so much! :D

Hi, Read this link.

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/rules_2009.asp

From what I understand, Your mum is a Canadian Citizen, but you are not. (You are if your Dad is also Canadian.)
Apparently your mum should have sponsored you when your were still at age of when she Can. (22 and in school full time or a dependent)

I am not sure if I have interpreted the article correctly.

But good luck to you!

Have your mother apply for her citizenship certificate. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof.asp

If she gets it, then you can try to apply for yourself.

No guarantees but since laws have changed though the years, it can sometimes be hard to tell if someone can claim citizenship or not. Canadians weren't actually Canadians until 1946. Before that, they were British subjects. It can also matter that your mother was born in the UK or whether her parents were married at the time. There is a self-assessment at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/rules/tool_04.asp but the only sure way to find out it to apply and see if you get it. If you don't apply, there is of course zero chance that you will get it :)
