I'm American, my grandmother was born in Halifax in 1909, and her father was born and raised in Halifax. They moved to the US in 1910. Im.still looking for birth records. Right now all I have is my great grandfather's 1915 certificate of intention for application as US citizen listing him as hailing from Halifax Nova Scotia, and his 1918 US citizenship cerificate indicated he was from Great Britain, and then Canada was just part of the empire.

With recent changes having been made in Canadian citizenship by descent rules, do I qualify? My grandmother born in 1909 was from there, as was her father. Her mother was Irish but emigrated to Halifax.
Information online on who qualifies is confusing and at times contradictory. One account suggests the one generation rule is applied only to those born after 2009,.and another suggests only Canadian relatives who were Canadian in 1947 could be used as the person from.whom to receive cite citizenship by descent. And yet recent laws granted Canadian citizenship retroactively to people born in Canada prior to 1947

With my grandmother being born in Halifax in 1909 and her parents decades before, do I qualify; or am I disqualified from being able to apply for citizenship by descent? I heard the one generation rule is not retroactive- so as I was born.in 1968, how many generations can I go back?

Recommend you post to the citizenship section of the forum. Based on the information you've provided, your mother would qualify for Canadian citizenship but you would not since you are the second generation born abroad.
