Greetings all,
My mother in law wants to get her citizenship certificate (her father was born in Ontario in 1933) and has completed the paperwork. The only thing she is missing is her father's birth certificate, which is taking some time from Service Ontario.

Is there any other type of document that can be used to establish citizenship such as a death certificate?

Thank you.

No, a death certificate is not proof of citizenship. Birth certificate, Certificate of Citizenship or Citizenship card.

I think as long as the death certificate was issued by the Canadian government, maybe. The last bullet point of the checklist under Scenario 3 says "any other evidence that your parent is a Canadian citizen", which could mean any document outside of the prescribed documents under that bullet list, but I am sure they would want something that they could verify. However, since your mother-in-law is considered the next-of-kin to her deceased father and can apply for his birth certificate without consent, this isn't really an excuse not to obtain said prescribed required document.

She hasn’t claimed her citizenship for 60+ years. At this point would think she could wait to get the birth certificate;)

You are asking about newborn passport photos. Was your MIL born in Canada? Is her daughter hoping to get citizenship though her that she can give togher child?

MIL was born in US. My twin girls were born on 1/26. I was born in Canada. We're hoping my wife can somehow get hers too but we'll see, doesn't seem likely. MIL dad was born in Ontario in 1933.

You could also sponsor her if you plan on moving back to Canada. Much more likely way to get citizenship. Don’t believe she qualifies any other way
