On their website you can see a simple demonstration of the basic statistics surrounding applications.
You can also request for a (free) cd-rom be to delivered to you so you can see the full statistics.
If you would like that, you can find it here. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/statistics/data-release/2009-Q3/index.asp

I requested mine and it arrived fairly fast. I first tried opening it on my fiances computer (PC) but it did not work maybe because it didn't have excel uploaded to it. Then I switched it offer to my Mac. Once it it is in, you will click the disc (unless of course it automatically pops up something) then you will see a lot of folders and such, I believe you click the one labeled something like (Date E). The e stands for English.

I went through some and came across the one labeled "Canada-Applications Processed Abroad and Processing Times." So I clicked on it. It brought me to an Excel table labeled for October 1, 2008 to September 30, 2009. It list the following things: immigration categories, persons passed, persons refused, approval rate, and total # of visas issued.

For the Family Class category it says the following:

Parents/Grandparents
16,918(persons passed) 1,621(persons refused) 91%(approval rate) 18,266(Total visas issued)

Spouses and Partners
34,233(persons passed) 9,226(persons refused) 79%(approval rate) 36,328(Total visas issued)

Dependent Children
2,708(persons passed) 805(persons refused) 77%(approval rate) 2,983(Total visas issued)

Family Class (other)
1,060(persons passed) 538(persons refused) 66%(approval rate) 1,164(Total visas issued)

I thought it was important to share that with everyone. If you would like to know it for other categories just ask and I will post it.

*I am not affiliated with CIC and do not have access to data. This comes directly from the "Quarterly Administrative Data Release Q3. 2009" CIC cd-rom which anyone can request for free on their site.

I mean no offence by this observation but I find it interesting that 91% of parent/grandparent sponsorships were approved - in spite of the fact that medical inadmissibility stops lots of applicants in that class from being approved. Yet those aps are, obviously, being submitted by people who have previously immigrated to Canada, in order to bring the rest of their family over - presumably for a better life. Yet we have 21% of spousal applications refused (many of which are being filed by Canadian citizens trying to bring a foreign national partner home to live with them), mostly on grounds of "non-genuine" relationship. I guess they can't claim a person's relationship with their parent or grand-parent is not genuine, so those get approved - but Canadian citizens who apply to bring foreign national partners to Canada - whether to give them a "better life" or just because they're in love - are subjected to suspicion, scrutiny and harassment and, according to appeal statistics, are frequently deemed "non-genuine" simply based on some IO's opinion. Something is wrong with this system.

I was honestly just thinking the same thing RobsLuv. This whole system is just something I feel I won't ever fully understand.

So you are saying that a "marriage is a marriage is a marriage" and that there are very few that are not bona fide. I suggest that you go back to CanLii http://www.canlii.org/en/ca/irb/index.html and query sponsorship and spouse as the text. Look at the percentage that are refused at the appeal stage.

Very surprised to see 1 in 5 spousal applications denied. Didn't think it would be that many.

Because it is the easiest and only way that some can qualify.
