Chinese visa office wanted MY passport when applying for my wife.

Firstly, we had all our Travel Document papers ready and printed but at the visa office in Guangzhou they had 4 more forms to fill out which took another hour. Both in Chinese and English, why?

The travel document is for my wife whose pr card had expired. The agent said for her to relinquish my original passport. Whoa there! We live in Shenzhen not Guangzhou. How can I even get on a bus without that and it is illegal for me to travel in China without it. They give no receipt or even a temporary travel document.

Part of my work is travel. How can they require my original passport when the processing time is 1.5 months for the document? They're going to keep my passport for 1.5 months!?! I grabbed the passport and wrote a letter to whoever does the visas telling them they are not getting my passport original for reasons stated above.

This sounds really strange that they would ask for that when they have a photocopy of every single page of it. Why would they require the original? If it.were for a day I could understand but 1.5 months?

Rediculous!

Any help with this?

If she is applying for a PRTD on the basis of having been with her Canadian spouse abroad, then they most likely want to confirm your travels to calculate time spent with her. Passport copies can be faked, so they probably want the original to be sure.

Then travel by private car because no one will ask for your Canadian passport during your travel between the two cities!
