Hi there,

I have problem asking the China Notary Public to certify my supporting doc, as we live in Shanghai now, all our supporting doc are in Chinese, things like jointed bank account, rental agreement to proof that we live together and phone bills etc...We need to first translate them into English and them request notary public to certify the copy. The lady at the notary public refused to offer us these service as she said that not every single thing that they are allowed to certify, usually they certify certificate. What should I do now? Should I just skipped all these doc and write down at my application form that I have no jointed bank account and we dont have rental agreement than sending them copy without notarized? I'm confused.

Thanks.

You need to get an official translator to translate the copies, and provide an affidavit that the translations are accurate. You or your family members can NOT translate documents.

If you are submitting photocopies of proofs they need to be "certified true copies". This just means the notary needs to look at the original, look at the photocopy, and certify that the photocopy is a true copy or the original. If you are submitting an original document and not a photocopy, then the original document does NOT need to be "certified true".

Perhaps you can find a different notary if one doesn't want to do it.

There is only 1 notary public in Shanghai and they have same regulation in the whole China. Me and my fiancee are applying using common law relationship and we are planning to get marry next year. He proposed to me this Feb.

Only thing I can recommend is to post your question into the China thread here. Hopefully someone there will have experience with this. http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/china-applicants-thread-t80896.0.html

Your original answer is correct, there is no need to involve a notary, just a certified translator.

Do not lie on the application form! Especially here, where what you would be lying about is something that would help your application if you told the truth. Definitely say you have a joint bank account and definitely say you have a rental agreement. You are applying common law, so this is even more important proof than it would be if you were married.

Get them translated by a certified translator. It is this translator who will be certifying that the translations are accurate. You don't need the notary in Shanghai to notarize the bank account and rental agreement.
