As a citizen of Canada, your baby will also be a citizen but you have to apply for a citizenship certificate for the baby. When the baby is born, have your wife contact the embassy to see if she can get a visa for the baby to come to Canada and apply for the citizenship certificate later or if she has to do it right away.

The child is Canadian by birth. You don't need to apply for a visa. You can apply for a temporary passport which takes about 3 months to get. The process can be expedited if you have good reasons.

Yeah, probably would be better to go for the temporary passport. According to http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/canada/certif-processing.asp it takes up to 10 months to get a citizenship certificate although might be possible to get it faster.
