Dear All,

Greetings,

I would like to inquire about when a child is born outside of Canada to a permanant resident, and later on, that permanant resident becomes a Canadian citizen, what is the procedure for that child to obtain the Canadian citizenship?

Your response will be highly appreciated.

Regards,

The child will need to be sponsored for PR first. Once the child is a PR, it will be possible to apply for citizenship.

There is no direct path to citizenship. There would only be a direct path to citizenship if the child was born after the parent became a citizen.

Thank you so much for your quick response. Just to clarify the current children situation, the first child was born 3 years ago to a permanant resident parent and second child was born and her parent became a Canadian citizen at the time.

The first child needs to obtain PR first. The second child is Canadian thus does not need to be sponsored for PR (assuming child was born after parent became Canadian)
