Hi,

We plan to have a child abroad in South Korea in few months and I have spoken with IRCC and consular in Korea but I would like to hear your opinions.

here's summary I found for our case;

If both parents are Canadians (naturalized or not), child born abroad is considered a Canadian.

However, in order to travel back to Canada, we require certificate of citizenship to apply Canadian passport

this process will take 8 - 9 months.

Other way around, I heard is that through facilitation visa (one-time entry), the baby can enter.

my question is that how difficult to obtain facilitation visa?

and is it possible to obtain OHIP once the baby enters with facilitation visa? Do you perhaps know other options except waiting for 8-9 months for the certificate of citizensship?

Thank you very much in advance

If the newborn Canadian parent is a Canadian by birth (i.e., born in Canada) or naturalization......the baby will be a Canadian citizen (1st generation born abroad).......and you need to apply for proof of Canadian citizenship and Canadian passport through Canadian embassy in South Korea.

If the newborn Canadian parent gained Canadian(s) by descent (i.e., the baby Canadian parent was born abroad to Canadian citizen)......the newborn will not be a Canadian citizen (2nd generation born abroad limit) and needs to be sponsored as PR in Canada.

Refer.......You aren’t automatically a Canadian citizen if you…

Its possible to obtain the proof of Canadian Citizenship abroad in 4 months....and you could also apply concurrently for proof of Canadian Citizenship and a Canadian limited validity passport (which has a 2 year validity) which takes fewer months to process.

Birth Registration

Canadian citizens are entitled to medical care and you have to be here for some time to qualify for OHIP.....refer.......Who Qualifies..

Hi

Don't bother with the facilitation visa. You can apply for a limited validity Canadian passport along with the the Certificate of Citizenship app. With proof of travel, the passport can be issued within weeks.

There is a 3 month wait period for OHIP.

Thanks for the reply

Yes i spoke to consular in korea and heard of a limited validity password can be obtained in 3 weeks

My question is. I am immigrant got citizenship in 2013 and my wife is also immigrant and got citizenship in 2005

Is thebaby born abroad a canadian because parents are also born abroad and naturalized canadians?

(Btw currently my wife and i have job in toronto working living and paying all necessary taxes. We just wanted to have a baby in South korea and go through post natal care for my wife and come back to Canada in few months after baby is born in Korea)

Thank you again for the replies

Most doctors would discourage flying commercially with babies who have not had any immunization especially if 3 months and under and long haul flights.
