Hi,
I have a tfw for the next 2 years but this limits me to work for the same employer at a given salary. This also limits my wife to work wherever she wants as long as I work for the given employer.
What is the best way to change my status or visa to an open visa so that I can get promoted or change jobs?

Also is it possible to change to freelance and invoice my current employer and other employers on a contract base jobs?
(I have EU passport and a valid tfw status for the next 2 years)

Hi

Open Work Permits are only given in very specific circumstances, as seen here http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?q=177&t=17. You cannot simply change your closed work permit to an open work permit.

If you want to change jobs, you will need to find a new employer with a positive LMO and apply for another work permit.

i agree with canuck_in_uk,

unfortunately you can't get an open work permit at this time, and you can only work for the employer specified in your work permit.
you can change your employer but you have to go through the LMO route and you will also get a closed work permit tied to one specific employer.
your wife got an open work permit BASED on your closed work permit because you are doing a skilled job.
the only way i see this happening is to switch with your wife then she will be holding a closed work permit and you will get an open work permit based on her's.
or if you apply for permanentt residence under CEC,FSW or PNP got first stage approval(AOR) and hold a valid work permit set to expire within 4 months then you can apply for BOWP(briding open work permit)which will be valid for one year.

good luck :)
