change status while waiting decision - PNP

Hello All,

If you have submitted the PNP nomination & it is awaiting decision , is it possible to switch to a visitor or student status within canada as the PGWP date is running out ?
If yes, what would happen when they approve the nomination? Can I switch back to full time work if the status was changed to Visitor in the period awaiting decision?

Did anyone experience a similar situation?

The file number is received only after the PNP application is approved, right ? I was thinking of the time frame between applying and waiting for their decision - if the PGWP time runs out, what can we do? as I am told that we should maintain a legal status in the country until the PNP nomination is received.
Any help will be much appreciated
