Change Passport - PR

Hey guys,

I have recently became a permanent resident of Canada. However, at the same time (after long years of processing) I have also acquired a EU citizenship. Now, my home country doesn't accept dual citizenship. So basically, the passport from my home country that I have used to get my pr will soon become invalid as I will have a new EU passport. Does anyone know what I should do in this case with my pr? Will my pr be affected?

Thank you!

This won't affect your PR in any manner. Once you have a new passport, update IRCC.

1. As the OP is already a PR s/he doesn't need to inform IRCC

Hello there,

thanks for your reply. So basically, that means that if I have landed and I have a pr card already, this change doesn't affect me? But in case I don't, I should update the IRCC?

Thanks!

Only the landing matters. PR card or not, you are a PR if you've landed.

Thanks Asivad. But what happens if I don't land before I get my new passport from a different country? What should I do in this case? Would you advice landing before my passport/nationality change?

Thanks!

In such an eventuality, I imagine you'll need to inform IRCC so that you can be issued a fresh COPR with your current valid passport details. I would certainly recommend landing before your nationality/passport is changed.

Hello Asivad,

My current situation is as follows:

- Currently in the EU; received a COPR with a landing visa valid until August.
- Visa printed on passport A with citizenship A (country Ukraine).
- I have been approved for the EU citizenship B of country B and have to do the citizenship oath within next 6 months (within October). The country B allows dual citizenship, country A is vague and contradictory, the law doesn't recognize dual citizenship but there is no obligation to surrender the Ukrainian citizenship upon acquisition of another.
- After I do the citizenship oath, I will have to surrender my EU PR card and will recieve a European passport.

My issue is:
- Do I have to notify the CIC of the fact that I'm getting a new citizenship?
- If I receive citizenship B with a new passport B, can I still travel to Canada on a passport A where my visa is printed?
- Is there any way to print a new COPR on my new passport B?
- If I fly to Canada on passport A and do the landing now in Canada and won't receive a PR in time before I will have to fly back to country B to do the oath, how can I then come back to Canada? Will they print a travel document on my new B passport?
- If I fly to Canada after I receive passport B, can I exit the EU on my passport B (because I need a visa/permit of stay to exit out of Schengen area and my current pr card will be taken after I get citizenship B) and enter Canada on passport A?

I'm extremely confused and don't know what's the best option for me at this point.

Thanks in advance!

hey Guys, Can someone please enlighten me in following ,damn Complex, situation (future situation).

I am Indian National, holding PR for Australia and applied to Canada PR as well (AOR Stage as of today).

My question is, I may get Aussie citizenship in Dec 2020 and I'm expecting my Canada PR in June 2019. Under both of these assumption, my both PR are against my Indian Passport. Now, when I get Australian citizenship in Dec 2020 before I move to Canada for good, I have following questions.
  • Can I update CIC regarding this movement (From Indian national to Australian National as a Citizen) ?
  • What happen to my Canada PR on my Indian Passport ?
  • Can IRCC update my PR detail under new passport (with new Country other than India) ?
I know it's quite complex situation but I'm sure many might have dealth with it.

Do let me know.

Thanks a lot in Advance.

Cheers,
Vir
