Myself & my family have already landed in Canada as PR in April 2010. However we had to go to our african home country for various reasons but will definitely come back to reside in Canada within the next 2 years. Our surname has an anomaly in our birth certificates & we are seriously cosnidering to apply for a change of name in our home country. It takes about 1 year to change our surname. Say our surname is changed in June 2011, we will get new passports, etc. Our old passport will then be cancelled.

Question: how will enter into Canada in June 2011 with our new passport, but our canadian PR, SIN number, landing certificate are in our old surname? Which canadian authorities should we inform beforehand? Is it the the Canadian consulate in Kenya, Nairobi? Pls advise.

It's a unique situation but in any case you would also need new PRs with corrected names. You can go ahead and notify the consulate but make sure you have your original birth certificate, affidavits and old passport with you when you travel.

Hi, will myself & family be allowed to land in Canada with new passports with new surnames provided I bring old passports, affidavits, etc. Or do we have to inform the nearest canada immigration office beforehand before we land in Canada with our new passports.

Thks.

Why not do the name change after you get back to Canada? Why give yourself these headaches now?

You know when you are travelling ALL documents need to match EXACTLY. So the spelling on your passport must match the spelling on your ticket which must match the spelling on your PR Card. If it doesn't and you are not from a visa exempt country, you are risking being denied boarding of the plane!

If you are sure you want to do this, please get advice from your Embassy, Consulate or High Commission first. You may require a "Travel Document" which you would have to apply for before you left for Canada.
