Hello everyone :)
I have deposited my passport to Cic Detroit and will soon receive immigrant visa in mail.
Currently I am single and have plans to get married.
I have heard rumours about not leaving Canada without getting pr card (takes another 6 months or so)
Anyone got a clue about the risk involved with leaving canada and changing status before receiving permanent resident card?

Sorry admins i cudnt find a similar post in this forum..
Your apt answer will be appreciated...
Thanks 8)

There isn't really a risk of changing status - once you're landed, you're a PR. The card allows you to travel, but you're officially a PR once you complete landing. Your new spouse will not have any status with Canada (you will now need to sponsor him/her under the family class or another program) if they're to become a PR.

The bigger risk is that you have to apply for a travel document outside of Canada - so depending on the processing time it may delay your return.

You can't get a PR Travel Document from within Canada (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/travel.asp). So if you want to travel outside of Canada (unless by private car to the US), you need to apply for the document at a Canadian embassy abroad. As such, it just increases the risk in case anything happens (ie they take long to get the document, you are missing information, etc.). Not impossible, just more risk.

Now that is strange. I didnt know a Permanent Resident need a Travel Document to enter Canada after receiving landing papers.
I would have to check with immigration lawyer.
Thanks for you info...

PR Card FAQ will answer all your questions - http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/faq/pr-card/index.asp

Think of your PR Card as a type of Canadian passport that only works in Canada. You can use your landing record to return to Canada from the USA via a private vehicle, but otherwise you need either your PR Card or a temporary travel document I linked earlier.

The rules have been like that for quite some time.

If you have plans to get married are you really "single"? Read this: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/-t107866.0.html
