Change of condition from work permit to study permit

Guys did anyone know or faced the same issue, where the work permit or temporary resident status expired and to extend the status, applicant applied for study permit ?? Once the work permit gets expired and you don't have any other option, except going back to school and apply before the expiry date after being accepted by the school. What is the status until you get the Decison on the application and what is the procedure after ??
