Hi Everyone,

I would like to get some advice/help on my approach to change of career and a Student Visa. My question is partially related to admission and partially to visa.

Basically my educational background and work experience is in finance but I'm very interested in changing my career from Finance to IT. I'm planning to get admission in an IT related program and do not want to continue studying finance anymore. Most of the agencies recommend MBAs and masters in Finance but I honestly do not see any value in it. I understand that VO grant visas easily based on RELEVANCY and may easily refuse a transition from Finance to IT. For that reason I am building an IT base via online UDEMY courses, then getting admission to an IT course and gradually get into the IT industry.

I do have a previous refusal for Study Permit based on applying from a foreign country and other usual refusal reasons.

I would like to know your opinion on my approach and if there is something that I am not correctly thinking through. Please share your thoughts.

Thank you all

It is risky as you need to show career and education advancement. Select a university degree to strengthen profile.

Thanks very much Naturgrl,

It does feel risky. Lets say, I get some certifications from UDEMY and then get admission into an IT program. Honestly that will be a genuine progression in my learning, at least more than finance. I do see my field as very saturated and this is something I will face even if I were in Canada.

I hope to find more cases where people did get visa for un-related programs. I did see 1 person but he had to go through several refusals and Judicial Review to win his case.

Thanks for your thoughts !

UDEMY is online so wouldn‘t be considered as education advancement unless you get ECA, which I don’t think you can.. You have to show career advancement/progression in your home county so saturation in Canadian job market has not bearing. The issue is why do you need to come to Canada to take IT and change fields. You can do that in your home country.

Thanks Naturgrl for helping me think through this.

So I'm thinking to change fields first and build a foundation for IT by taking UDEMY courses. I believe I can get some basic jobs with that. After that I can put in my application and say that I want to advance that basic level of IT education I have and for that reason I want to get an IT degree in Canada.

You are right they can question me that why do you have to study that In Canada but that goes for any filed of study. Honestly I dont know how to answer that WHY CANADA part for any degree/course.

Your SOP will have to discuss why you must come to Canada to study IT and spend tens of thousands of dollars. You will need to research if you even meet the requirements for an IT degree.
