Chances to Remain in Canada as a hairdresser?

This is my first post, and I should say that this page (questions and answer) has been helpfull to me. I just got my study permit approved a few weeks ago, I'll be studying hairdressing in Ottawa next year.

My course takes 10 months, and after graduation the College demand to all thes students to do one year intership in a Canadian Hair Salon,

Here are my questions: Would I be able to remain in Canada after my one year intership? How and when can I apply for the PR? Which immigration program would be better for me?

So just to clarify your course is 10 months followed by 12 months internship after which you actually graduate as do not understand how the college can demand you do anything if you actually graduate after 10 months ?

So will the college class this as a 2 year course meaning you could maybe get a 3 year PGWP ? Which college, is it public or private ?

You should assume your chances of PR are very low.

The internship is required after your graduate. This means it's not covered by your study permit and you must have a work permit to complete the internship.

Hair dressing programs are typically offered by private colleges and they don't qualify for a post graduate work permit. We have seen many cases here recently where students who completed hairdressing courses were not able to work once their programs were finished (because they didn't qualify for a PGWP). Even if you do qualify for a post graduate work permit, with a 10 month program you will only get a 10 month PGWP - this won't be enough to complete a 1 year internship at a salon.

You should assume it will be extremely difficult (likely impossible) to get a close work permit since this requires an employer to go through the LMIA process and prove no employer could be found for the role.

The internship is not part of the program. It's something the school asks students to do after they graduate. So a PGWP or closed work permit is required to complete it. Agreed there's a good chance this is a private college - so no PGWP.

If the internship was part of the program and a requirement to graduate, the study permit would have been refused. Co-op / internship duration cannot be more than 50% of the total program length.

Indeed, it is a private college. It seems the only chance I got it is to apply for another program in a public college after I graduate from this one, within Canada, or change my DLI as soon as I get to Canada.

Any advice?

If you want the best chance of getting PR, you need to take at least a two year program at a public college so that you qualify for a 3 year PGWP. You can take the hairdressing course at a private college and then switch to a 2 year public college program. Or you can forget about the private college program and switch to the 2 year public collee immediately.
