1. Do you start with Task 1 or 2
Task 2 carries more marks in writing than Task 1. So, it is better to start with Task 2. I always did this

2. How much time do you spend on each task
Pretty much what is stipulated for each task. However, I usually target to complete Task 2 in 45 min. Task 1 may carry less marks but it is still very important to complete it.

3. How much time do you spend on brainstorming in task 2
You should find a balance by practicing this. Task 2 should have at least 250 words. More you write, more chances of making mistakes. Limit your Task 2 to less than 280-290 words, 300 tops. Now find out how much time you need to write 300 words. I require about 20-25 min. So, I spend about 10-15 min brainstorming and noting down points.

4. In Agree/Disagree essay, Do you include critics viewpoint or only emphasise on the arguments favouring your point of view ?
Ideally it shouldn't matter. However, considering both sides of the argument helps you in providing a good conclusion.

5. How many words do you generally end up writing task 2 essay: 250+ or 275+ or 300+ ?
As I mentioned above, Task 2 should have at least 250 words. You lose marks for writing less than 250 words. However, there are no extra points for writing more. In fact, more you write, more chances of making errors. Ideal would be 250-275 words. Remember, exam hall would be the worst place to strategize all this. Practice as many times as possible before the actual exam.

6. Any other insight, would be highly appreciated....
This website has loads of good examples and tips.

I managed an 8.0. I really reccommend researching essay structures, like the "hamburguer" method:

Look up "Five-paragraph_essay" on wikipedia

This makes it easier to focus on other things beside structure, and also makes better use of your time.

1. Do you start with Task 1 or 2
start with task 1 as it is easy and needs less time. multitask. write task 1 and simultaneously think about task 2.
2. How much time do you spend on each task
Task 1 - 15 mins to write and 5 mins to check. Task 2 - 35 mins to write and 5 mins to check.
3. How much time do you spend on brainstorming in task 2
dont need to. ideas usually flow easily
4. In Agree/Disagree essay, Do you include critics viewpoint or only emphasise on the arguments favouring your point of view ? tend to sit on the fence as some examiners are biased and may not agree with my answer. i always think about who my reader is and usually tend to write what they want to read.

300+

So basically you can
Ans 1-multitask task 2 ideas while writing Task 1
Ans 3-starts task 2 without writing down ideas, as they easily flow to ur mind :-X
Ans 4-you equip the writing style of an author who writes keeping his reader interests in mind
Ans 5-And you write more than 300 words in 35 minutes (gulp...) :'(

Please do not mind, I do not intend to sound sceptical but it does mean that either you are overstating some facts or you are a Superman in Writing. 8)

+1 (=71) for this exceptional feedback, honestly these are some serious insights, especially multitasking thing, I will try to give it a shot, if I can :-[

On a lighter note, I think I will end up only using ur idiom, "sit on the fence" :D

I'm not a superman. My wife is a journalist and she chewed my brains trying to get my writing right. My mother in law was a teacher and used to correct my wife's essays with a red pen and my wife did that to me when she checked my writing. Now I can't thank her enough. But yes, they were her tips to write keeping the reader in mind and to multitask. Women can multitask well. My mind works in compartments and only one compartment works at a time. I got my score on the 5th attempt.

One definitely needs three to four attempts to implement these strategies in the real test to achieve a 7+. I rather went blank when tried to brainstorm ideas and I'm making sense for why you took 5 attempts to have your desired band score

Because I was overconfident and thought I could nail it easily but old habits die hard and it took me 7 attempts to realise that a low score wont get me anywhere.

My writing score is 8, it was my first attempt. This is what I did:

1. Do you start with Task 1 or 2
Task one, always. Because task 2 is important and needs more planning, effort etc so get task 1 out of the way as soon as possible. Ideally aim for 10 minutes, but 12 minutes is absolute maximum you should practice with. This will give you a couple of spare minutes at the end to check word count and spelling errors.

2. How much time do you spend on each task
10-13 minutes task one, all the remaining on task 2 and 2-4 minutes in the end to check for errors and make sure word count isn't low.

3. How much time do you spend on brainstorming in task 2
2-3 minutes maximum. Start structuring your points into bullet the moment it comes to your mind. Stick to 2-3 main points maximum that you will elaborate on in each paragraph. Remember IELTS is not about creativity, it's about fully answering the task and displaying prowess in language. It is okay if you don't have great ideas, just use generic ones.

4. In Agree/Disagree essay, Do you include critics viewpoint or only emphasise on the arguments favouring your point of view ?
Always offer a conflicting view even if you agree, unless your stance on the subject is "fully agree". Avoid fully agreeing to topics as it limits your ability to showcase variety of writing. If you're agreeing to something, first introduce your agreement and then a contrast viewpoint using words like however/although etc. Introduce your conflicting view in the last line of introduction itself, so that the examiner knows what is coming for them.

5. How many words do you generally end up writing task 2 essay: 250+ or 275+ or 300+ ?
300+ is suicide in the timeline given. 250 is too short and you'll have to rely on manually counting words to make sure you didn't accidentally fall under limit, which will waste time. Best is to aim for 270-280, practice this word limit on IELTS answer sheet sample printed at home, so that you know approximately where on paper the limit ends. (eg. with my writing 270 was 1 full page of front and 2/3 of back.)

6. Any other insight, would be highly appreciated....
- Always practice on answer sheet sample.
- Practice and practice, there is no alternative to this.
- Do not read model answers before attempting a question, it takes away the element of "surprise" and "unknown" you will encounter in real exam. Instead, do your own answer first and then compare it to model answer to see how you could have done better.
- Write the English you're comfortable with. Do not memorize model answers. If you try to fit in memorized answers in your current topics instead of thinking independently you might lose even more time trying to organize your thoughts.
