How necessary is it to get certified copies of documents such as university degrees and birth certificates?

I was recently nominated for BC PNP and I just simply photocopied my degree and it was fine. I'm now about to apply to CIC and was wondering whether I should worry about getting a certified copy of my birth certificate sent from home (UK) or will I be ok with just a photocopy?

check the document checklist , if it says certified copies you need to get them certified...if it says copy then you just need to copy them.....
