certified copies and translations

Hi all! I know this topic comes up quite a bit but I could find anything on my exact question:

Is it necessary to have a certified true copy of a document if a translator has also stamped the copy they received? He is an ATIO translator and each translation and scanned "original" (but not the original, if you know what i mean!) i sent have been stamped with "certified true translation". I thought it was normal that the translator stamped their translations and then I should go to the consulate (or other notary) to get my originals copied and certified. Does anyone know?

Anything copied from an original needs to be notarized as a true copy and then certified by the translator as a true translation. This applies only to documents listed on the checklist. If they request the original you do not need notarizing.
Think of it this way. How would the translator know that they are working from a true copy?
A lot of people get confused by CIC's use of the word certified. They are not clear and use the term at times loosely.
