Carrying dollars (CASH) to CANADA

i am going to CALGARY on student visa.
I wish to carry 2000-3000 dollars along with me.

Can i carry them right away or i should get them on passport ??

What should i do??

avoid cash and take convertible American Express Traveller Cheques, carry only 20 dollar denomination cash, not more than 100 (Rs. 5400). Visit bank and take your LOA and PP, and apply for a student account and get a debit card, virtual debit card.
