Maybe some of you who fall under the country specific Caribbean can help me out. There has been a discussion that has been going on in a group I'm in, with regards to if an original marriage certificate needs to be sent or simply a photo copy. I'm in DR, and so the marriage certificate will have to be translated from Spanish to English.

In the country specific checklist guide at the beginning it states: " Do not send originals, unless you are applying in Cuba (see note below).
Send photocopies of all documents except the forms listed below (items 1 to 7) and police certificates, which
must be originals. If your documents are not in English or French, send a notarized (certified) translation
with a copy of the originals." and Number 7 of that items is the marriage certificate.

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/guides/3909e.pdf

Now, since the Dominican marriage certificate is in Spanish, we will have a translated version. Am I correct in thinking that the ORIGINAL certified translation is required and only a PHOTOCOPY of the initial spanish marriage certificate?

Thanks for your insight.

YES, that is how I understand it as well. Some members did send in their original certificates because they thought it would save time later as some members were getting requests from their IO's to submit originals, but not all members have and those that have not, did not all get requests to send in originals either so it is a small chance to get that request? I myself did not send in originals... Definately give them original of translation but up to you to send original of certificate, but it is not mandatory to do so.

Thanks for the confirmation, Jamgirl. I think that's what I'll do then. Send the original translation and a copy of the Spanish marriage certificate. If they require the original, I guess the Santo Domingo visa office will simply request it.
