We want to get a car as soon as we get to canada and know we have 60 days to change our licence and get a G licence.
Two questions.
Can we buy a car with an international licence and what insurance to get?
We have comprehensive insurance over here in Ireland but can't find the equivalent in Toronto. Any help from landed people or seniors?????????

On International licence it is tough to "buy" car. You have to call several dealers and see if someone is ready. next hurdle is registration. You can call or email service ontario office to check that if it is possible or not. and comprehensive insurance are available here.

The problem with an international license will not be in buying a car but in buying insurance. A car dealer will be more than willing to see you a car even if you do not have a license!!!! It is advisable to get a drivers license in Canada and then go ahead with the purchase of a car.

If you buy car on payments or lease a car, you will need comprehensive insurance because the car will be in the name of the bank/dealer/agency who gives you the loan and they will insist on having comprehensive insurance.

If you buy a car paying cash, then you are free to choose your insurance either comprehensive or only third party.

Either ways, without a driving history in Canada insurance costs can range from $ 600-1000 for every six months. If you are a male below 25 years of age, this cost can be even greater.

The best way to buy car insurance is to shop around and get quotes from 4-5 companies. Buy the one that is not only cheap but also RELIABLE since there are a lot of "discount" insurance companies who will insure you for cheap but will be nowhere to be seen when you are involved in an accident.

You can purchase a full coverage, which is really expensive. Bring all your driving records for the last ten years or so. A Canadian driver's license is required to purchase auto insurance. Do some research and consider buying a car in the US. Heard many Canadians do that.
