My MIL is visiting our family (in the US) on a multiple-entry US Visitor visa. We are thinking of taking her to Canada on a visit (by car) for the holidays. We might go again for the Olympics in Feb. So, we debating between a Single entry vs. Multiple entry Canadian visitor visa.

  • With a single entry Canadian visitor visa, can she visit Canada multiple times from the US (assuming that she doesn't go outside of the US & Canada in-between)?
Can she get a multiple entry Canadian visa longer than 6 months?

When she enters Canada and is admitted for 6 months (sometimes less), she can re-enter on the single entry visa from the US during the time perod she was admitted.

Yes she can apply for a multiple entry visa and there had been posts about multiple entry visas valid for up to 5 years. But as to her being granted n-year multiple is up to the visa officer.

Can she potentially get a multiple-entry visa longer than 6 month -- though she won't be staying in the US for more than 6 months?

What do you mean multiple entry visa longer than 6 months? Do you mean the validity period of the multiple entry visa stamped on her passport? If so, then the answer is yes.

Yes.

why she needs a multiple entry visa if she can travel to and from Canada to the US on a single entry too? a single entry visa is easier to get.
