Canadian sponsoring Colombian for spousal sponsorship

I’m on the last phase of my application and have run into a roadblock with the Notarize phase. It says on the Canadian immigration website “all copies of Colombian civil documents must be notarized at the local notaria where they were issued”
For us this pertains to our marriage certificate as well as my partners birth certificate. The problem is that The marriage certificate is already issued with the highest level of authentication. And they don’t notarize here like they do in canada. To my knowledge higher levels of authentication are done through apostile. But the webpage makes no mantion of this... im very lost :S please help

I am not an expert but I too am planning to sponsor a Colombian citizen.

As far as I know, the Colombian notaries will issue notarized documents or "copia autenticada". It is essentially a copy of the original document with the notaries stamp verifying it's authenticity. In regards to the birth certificate my fiancee had to go to the same Notaria at which her birth was registered and request it. They asked if we need it apostilled but as I far as I know we do not (Canada doesn't actually recognize the apostille process).

I am not positive about the marriage certificate but I would bet the process is similar. You should be able to request a notarized copy from the Notaria at which you marriage was registered. Also, most documents that are apostilled actually have to be notarized first. I am not sure what your marriage certificate looks like but is it possible it's both notarized and apostilled?

Hi. I am sponsoring my Colombian common law partner living with me in Canada. Is the Cédula de Ciudadanía considered a Civil document and hence something that needs to be notarized in Colombia?

Does the Common Law application ask for a copy of the Cedula?

I know the Spousal application asks for the information on the 'national identity document' (which I assume is the Cedula) but they do not ask for a copy of it to be included in the application.

it does in the checklist (IMM 5589e). Page 6 part 1.

The checklist IMM5533 for spousal sponsorship only asks for the copy of national identity card it if it's listed as part of the country specific requirements and it doesn't come up for me when I search country specific requirements?

IMM5589e seems to require it regardless. I am not sure of the correct answer but I personally would error on the side of caution. Are you or your common-law partner currently in Colombia? It wouldn't hurt to go down to a Notaria and see if they can provide the Notarized copy.

does anyone know if the libreta militar card is considered a civil document for which the copy needs to be notarized?
