I wanted to share my experience crossing the border to marry my US fiancé. I decided to take a leave-of-absence from work for 5 months following our wedding. I got a lot of questions when crossing the border. You basically have to prove intent that you are coming back to Canada. You do not need a fiancé visa for this, but I would carry documents to prove your intent to come back (e.g. Tenancy agreement/mortgage information, current letter of employment, recent pay stubs, banking statements to show you can support yourself (if you are going to be there for a few months). I learned that Canadians can visit the U.S. for up to 6 months, but they will still ask you many questions.
Now that we are married, I always keep a current letter of employment, my tenancy agreement (& receipt showing I am paid my landlord up until I come back), as well as any documents from CIC (e.g. SA letter to show we are eventually immigrating to Canada) when I go visit the U.S. I find when I carry these documents it is much easier to cross the border. They rarely ask to look at the documents, but I let them know I have them in case they want to look at them. It can be a very stressful process. Stay calm and always tell the truth. I hope this helps!
