Hello,

I am a Canadian Citizen who is currently living in Bermuda. I am married to a Bermudian and we are expecting our first child March 2012.

We are looking to move back to Canada within the next year and I am seeking to determine the necessary steps to get my childs Canadian Citizenship as well as his passport. I was able to find information on the necessary procedures to sponser my husband for permanant residence but unable to find information on how to obtain my child's Canadian Passport.

I see that they mention sponsering dependants but since I am a Canadian Citizen who was born and raised in Canada and my parents are Canadian who were born and raised in Canada, that should automatically grant my child Canadian Citizenship correct?

Looking forward to any direction or advice on the next steps. Thank you!

Yes - it definitely sounds like your child is a Canadian citizen.

Before you can apply for a passport - you need to apply for proof of citizenship. Informaiton is below - hope this helps:

I'd like to add to this that when you see that the processing time for a citizenship certificate is more than a year, don't worry about it because for babies, they will issue a temporary passport at the embassy as long as you have applied for the citizenship certificate even if you don't have it yet.

Thank you so much for your quick responses. In regards to the proof of citizenship, if I already have a birth certificate then I shouldn't need to apply for proof of citizenship correct?

You are already a Canadian citizen with a birth certificate and a passport so you don't need a citizenship certificate but the baby will unless it is born in Canada.

If your child is born outside Canada, you can apply the Citizenship Certificate from any Canadian consulate
