I have been accepted for a post graduation course at 2 colleges in canada.the duration is 1 year and 2 years for them respectively.I am 40 years old.I want to know whether I should accept the one year course with a 1 year post study work permit visa or for the 2 year course which allows a 3 year work permit visa? which program would make me eligible for a pr visa? Does the visa office follow the same points system for this catagory which it folllows for federal skilled worker catagory?Would the documents required be same as if I had applied from India for a arranged employment pr catagory?

Hi, I am no expert but here are my thoughts..........according to me with 1 year prog you are at a disadvantage on 2 points:

1) you only will get a 1 year PG work permit which will not give you enough experience after school. I am not aware how difficult or easy it will be for you to get a LMO after your studies, if you choose to stay on in Canada.

2) 1 year PG study will DEFINITELY not allow you to apply through CEC (graduate route), unless you get a LMO, are able to extend your work permit and work for a company for 2 years (there is a talk of CIC changing foreign worker experience to 1 year).

But, bear in mind that there are no points system for CIC. You either qualify or you do not. That has its advantages and disadvantages because it means that if you do not qualify on even 1 of their requirements, they reject the aopplication, no questions asked. But, if you can collect all the necessary paperwork then it seems to be smooth sailing (at least according to all the posts I have read here)

Finally, this is a decision you have to make keeping in mind your financial constraints, family commitments and future plans.

Personally, I would recommend a 2 year PG course but make sure that it IS a 2 year course. It should not be a 1 year course that has become 2 years because of the way it is structured for example a 1 year course can take 2 years to be completed because the classes are held only 2-3 days a week. The course should be a full time course (as advertised on the college's website) with 4 semesters and all semesters having full time classes.

Good Luck and Best wishes.

CEC has 2 streams - a Temporary Foreign Worker stream requires 2 years of full-time employment in Canada to qualify. The Post-Grad stream requires at least 2 years of full-time study in Canada leading to a degree or diploma, followed by 1 year of full-time employment.

So completing a 1 year course and 1 year of employment would not qualify under either stream in the CEC program. Completion of a 2 year program, plus one year of full-time employment may qualify. You can read more details here -
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/cec/apply-who.asp

CEC does not use a point system, it is a pass/fail system. You either meet the criteria or you don't.

Would the documents required be same as if I had applied from India for a arranged employment pr catagory?

Most of the documents are the same. One difference is that the FSW application requires Letters of Reference from all employers covering the the past 10 years (from anywhere in the world). The CEC application requires Letters of Reference from Canadian employers covering the previous 3 years.

After completing the 1 year post graduate course can I apply to extend my study visa for 1 more year to do another 1 year post graduate course? So I would be eligible for a 3 year work permit? But finding funds for studying in the second year would be a constraint.I am glad to know that it is not the regular points system but the actual work experience in Canada which is taken into consideration.

Only if the 2nd course leads to a Master's degree.

So I would be eligible for a 3 year work permit?

Probably.
