Hello,

I am PR and my husband Canadian citizen living and working in the US. Our baby was recently born in the US.
We plan to return to Canada permanently as a family in the next five months. Given that current processing times for certificate/proof of Canadian citizenship take about ten months:
1) Can our baby return to Canada (to stay longer than six months) with us on her US passport?
2) Should we apply for the certificate while still in the US (to show the application is in process) or after returning to Canada?
3) Does anyone know the process at the airport/when we will be traveling back (documents we need, etc.)?

Thank you!

1) Yes.
2) Sooner is better.
3) Birth certificate showing both parents, ID of citizen-parent, and if you have a copy of the certificate application, that will be handy.

That said - for infants/very young children, the passport/border people don't seem to get too fussed about children who are US passport holders.

One warning: you should look into health care for the kid, provinces can differ slightly. But I think most would let the kid get covered with the birth certificate/parent's citizenship info (+ copy of citizenship certificate application).
