Hi everyone,

I’m a Canadian citizen but currently reside in the US (green card holder).

My passport expired on 02/2018. I emailed my local consulate and they said to enter Canada, I can only travel by land. (I live in Nevada) I then called their automated number, it had said I can travel to Canada with my US green card + proof of citizenship + government ID. Now it didn’t specify if that was only valid trough land travel or air travel as well.

Any of you Canadians traveled back home with a green card through air? Or was it only by land? If I decide to travel by land, I would need to fly to Bellingham then drive to Vancouver BC. Am I able to drive a US rental car to Canada?

And yes, I’m well aware of being able to apply/renew my passport while living in the US. However, I was in the process of the application, I got my photos taken at a place that “specializes” in foreign passport photos, but they still seemed a little off to me. I’m worried about submitting my application and having it denied due to an invalid photo, thus wasting $260. I would rather visit family and then ultimately renew my passport in person.

Thank you in advance.

You need a valid passport to board an airplane from the US to Canada. So flying isn't an option until you've renewed your passport. Yes - you can rent a car and drive across the border.
