Hi folks! I'm hoping someone can help me. My mother was born in Ontario Canada and moved to Minnesota as a young child. I was born in MN (1977). My MN b/c states my mothers place of birth as Ontario. I currently live in Seattle and want to move to Vancouver, BC. My mother will not give me a copy of her Canadian b/c. Can I apply for my Canadian Proof of Citizenship certificate w/o my mother b/c?

No, you have to prove that your mother was a Canadian citizen at the time of your birth. For that you require a copy of her birth certificate, and copy of your birth certificate.

Were you born before or after Feb. 14, 1977?

Also, when was your mother born, and when did she leave Canada?

Was your mother ever naturalized as a U.S. citizen (or a citizen of another country)? If so, when?

I presume your father wasn't Canadian. Were your parents married when you were born?

Check the Ontario vital statistics site and see who they allow to access/obtain birth certificates...you may be able to prove you are the daughter/son with your US b/c.

Yet nobody has thought to ask WHY she will not give the OP a copy of her birth certificate...

Nope, his mother would have to be deceased for him to obtain a copy

I didn't ask because I think the OP mainly wants advice about citizenship laws and procedures.

It seems like a personal matter, not something that she would like to disclose. Otherwise, she would have shared it initially. Let's focus on giving advice around the legalities of immigration, not pick at personal issues :P
