Canada vs India

Hello guys,
I am totally confused in regards to immigrating to Canada
I am in a state of massive confusion,will really appreciate if I receive guidance from senior/experienced immigrants,students,and citizens of Canada.
The advice and knowledge will be life changing for me.

First of all let me help with my introduction and what I do
I am 25 years old, post graduate in hospitality from LOndon UK (2010)
With a combined work experience of 4 years including Indian and British hotels.

Right now I am running my fathers restaurant at Mumbai India which is well established and doing well businesswise.we achieve average monthly profit of Canadian $ 3000 approx after Taxes etc.

But having staying in London for two years I strongly feel that the quality if life back home is really bad specially with rising taxes and costs things seems to get worse in India.also infrastructure is in bad shape although I live in a metropolitan city Mumbai.
Apart from that rising corruption running business is difficult.


Considering this I have kept one last option open I.e immigrate to Canada based on following plans.

Come to Canada on a student visa and do a 8 month do a course in hospitality, in toronto
Hunt a job, I specialise n bar and wines.
Apply for a work permit.
Once settled in Canada , start a small business.

Is it worth it?? Or should I stay where I am.

Stay where you are in my humble opinion. Read the experiences of people who've already moved. Ask yourself why in terms of % Canada has a higher diaspora than India and China, why so many people can't even meet their PR residency obligations and are in a hurry to leave.

I'm not saying don't come or not, just make sure you read both good and bad.

Well for me personally by the grace of GOD, life has been pretty good, I can't complain. My parents come from a well to do back ground, so I haven't had to struggle, again thank GOD. My parents were able to pay for my college, get me a car etc..so I didn't graduate with tons of debt like a lot of people do. I came to this forum to figure out how to sponsor my American wife, it's done now.

I can't give you personal horrible experiences.

However, I know a lot of ethnic people (Indians, Pakis) , know tons of immigrants. Plus I travel overseas quite a bit, and in talking to people in other countries I just feel like they overrate Canada way too much.

However, i'm sure many immigrants will be able to share their story with you. I know lots of immigrants from your country, India who face many barriers in terms of working in Canada. Most of these guys are doctors or engineers. When the money runs out they have to take survival jobs.

Canada probably has the most educated taxi drivers and walmart workers in the world, to me that is a huge shame.


I'm not sure what kind of barriers you would face in your profession. However I can tell you this.


1) Cost of living is really high in Canada

2)Lots of taxes

3)High rents, high cost of houses

4)Salaries are not that high compared to other Western countries.

5) The cheaper part of the cities are pretty dangerous


6)Taxes taxes and more taxes! Even people making 100K + a year struggle in Canada to pay their bills and stuff.

I'd say give Canada a shot and be wary of people from certain ethnic backgrounds being discriminatory against their own. I've seen a growing amount of that due to some people not wanting competition.

Canada's job market is stable, taxes are only high to me because I was in California where taxes are low but not even in social assistance friendly California do you get the same benefits as here in Canada. Job markets like that in Calgary and throughout the GTA have programs and agencies that assist new immigrants to get employment. For some who are utterly pessimistic and want things handed to them on a silver platter in a very competitive nation as far as jobs go, Canada is not the place.

The key to moving to a place is removing one's religious ideals of how a place should be, obviously a few gave themselves unrealistic expectations and are paying for their naivety. Be wary of taking advice from those with such outlandish opinions and immeasurable anger and resentment, Canada is not by any means a utopia, and I'd heavily advise any "grass is greener" mentality.. the best thing I can tell you is visit an area and check out the job market yourself before committing to move.

Yes you are right right now I am at Mumbai handling my fast food restaurant, it's really nice to hear about your positive experience in Canada so far and I hope it continues in the same manner.
Well I am not overrating or over expecting much from Canada possible assume that the first year or two will be hard and challenging , yes it's really sad to hear about the plight of well educated professionals working as taxi drovers and security guards,
Being from the hospitality background I am sure and hopefull in a positive approach to score decent mid level hotel/bartending jobs.
Also would like to thank you for the 6 points which you have stressed upon but really hard to even agree that people earning 100k+ PA struggling, hope its not true.

I am still finding it hard to decide and conclude whether or not to come and give it a shot there.

Once we see exaggerated statements like that, our immediate reaction should be IGNORE.

No one says going and settling in a new country will be easy. Heck! we may face a lot of challenges settling in a new city in our own country.

But if someone can oly say negative things about the place / country they are living in, we can only wonder as to what is stopping them to find better avenues.

Or as Bargled mentioned its quite possible that they want to scare the heck out of new immigrants to boost their false sence of security.

My major concern is in regards of making the right decision I.e leaving or at least unable to carry on with the current ongoing business back home in order to venture out into new opportunity.
This clearly doesn't means I am affraid of challenges or facing a new life in new country, starting from scrap,my concerns are to make the right move, as my business back home is dong fairly good,
But considering deteroiting quality of life, corruption in India I don't see a bright future at least smoothly, with more and more rigidity and corruption from government officials it's getting harder and harder specially in the food business.
Any suggestions ??

You can always look for opportunity to expand your business at home. For example, you can buy out a local restaurant in Canada and start from there.

Canada Vs India - In my opinion, life in Canada can't be compared to life in India. I am not offending you but the quality of life is obviously the best and with regard to business this place is ofcourse the best. It all depends on what sort of personality you have and for what you reason you wanna live here. It is a bit ludicrous when people complaint about lack of good job, We know what sort of proffessionals are there in India and if they wanna be competative in Canada they should upgrade their skills and learn their work ethics.
If you are a kind of person who loves freedom and quality of life, you will be happy in Canada. If you are a good businessman you will shine (May be you might face few failures but I think a businessman knows failing is a part of business). And finally you will stay very happy, if you stay away from grouchy immigrant community and stay among Canadians, they make better neighbours and will give a positive energy.

Good idea !! But honestly I believe prior ground knowledge is really crucial to obtain in restaurant industry, this can be done by working for minimum 3-4 years this helps to get first hand experience and exposure before starting out,

you are right about the quality of the life.. you can come here but prepare for a lot of struggle.. pay for hospitality job depends on who you work for... ofcourse you will have to start entry level and pay is minimum at most places.
if you are ready for it then my advice is get your skills upgraded by studying/working here..then buy out some restaurant

but me personally if i was making 3000$ a month in india..i would never come here

The weather here is nice..and I like the healthcare system here..
Finding a job is not hard but finding a good one is.
I am starting school in September ...
I am not earning enough to save yet but living a nice life..
Some things are overly expensive here but meh..
Overall I am pretty satisfied with my life.
