Hi all,

I have an urgent issue. My family is holding Canada pr cards now. My kid was born in USA, so he has "USA" as nationality on his Canada PR card. but my wife and I are studying in USA on non-immigrant visa. We plan to travel back to our home country, and my kid will apply for the passport of home country. However, we have a problem with the Canada pr card nationality. If my kid have a new passport of my home country, do we need to change the nationality on his Canada par card???

if not, I think we will have big trouble to exit home country at the border agency. Because my home country doesn't recognize dual citizenship, so the USA nationality on Canada PR card will most like void the pr card legitimacy, the border agency will not recognize the pr card with another nationality instead of home country. So, what should I do ? any comments?

Thank you very much!

I am unsure why your childs 'nationality' on his PR card would cause an issue upon your exiting your home country. Surely your border agents understand that your child was born outside of the country and did not have a choice on how his PR card listed his nationality.

If you are not allowed to have dual citizenship, then your child will need to forfeit his US citizenship in order to comply with your country's regulations. However, your child can not renounce his own citizenship until he can prove he understands the consequences of such an action and you, as a parent, can not renounce it for him. You should read this to better understand. http://travel.state.gov/content/travel/english/legal-considerations/us-citizenship-laws-policies/renunciation-of-citizenship.html I am not sure what you can do to comply with your countries rules and/or regulations regarding dual citizenship, but it would appear at this point your child is not able to renounce his own citizenship with the USA.

Best of luck to you.
